Friday Quote: On Writing Poetry

"8. Be a good steward of your gifts. Protect your time. Feed your inner life. Avoid too much noise. Read good books, have good sentences in your ears. Be by yourself as often as you can. Walk. Take the phone off the hook. Work regular hours."

--Jane Kenyon
an excerpt from "Everything I Know About Writing Poetry (Notes for a lecture)"
from her book, A Hundred White Daffodils

I certainly was drawn to it. I reading this was the point at which I began to understand that living a life and poetry could be the same thing--that one could create poetry by living a life well, whether or not one ever set pen to page.

It's been the beginning of a major perception shift for me.
